The Garden District

Within many cities and towns, you'll often find smaller communities: neighborhoods within neighborhoods. They develop their own identities, which their residents proudly claim and reinforce. In Coeur d'Alene, one of those communities is the Garden District.

The Garden District is bordered by Fourth Street to the west, 11th Street to the east, Montana Avenue to the north and Sherman Avenue to the south.

The houses are generally well maintained, with the historic aspects still in place. Most of them were built in the early 1900s. You'll find homes from the 1930s and a few from the 1940s, although there is at least one that was built in 1890. The "new" ones generally were built in the 1950s.

People in the Garden District have usually chosen to live there for its historic nature and proximity to downtown. The pride of ownership is evident as you walk the streets of this charming neighborhood.

While there is an active community association, there are no dues and no CC&Rs. Phippeny Park, at Seventh and Montana, sits on the site of the original Coeur d'Alene High School; these days, residents hold their annual neighborhood picnic in this 2.5 acre park, with its beautiful shade trees, recently updated playground and basketball court.

Most of the homes have a one-car garage, although there are some with none at all. A few have two-car garages, but those tend to lie at the upper end of the price range.

In the spring and summer, yards are a riot of color with their lovingly maintained gardens and landscaping. In the autumn, the streets are paved with gold as leaves fall from the stately trees that soar overhead.

In the Garden District, you're within walking distance from Sanders Beach, City Beach and McEuen Park, not to mention Tubbs Hill and downtown Coeur d'Alene with its shops, cafes and restaurants. Or the up-and-coming midtown area.

Children even have a designated sledding hill blocked off at Boyd and Ninth Street. How cool is that?
